SYMPTOMS AND PREVENTION OF MIGRAINE


Migraine can be described as an intense headache which occurs as a pounding pain in one area of the head. Migraine attacks can lead to a lot of hours of immense pain and make a person very uncomfortable.

Types of Migraine

Common types of migraine include the following:

Migraine with aura: This type of migraine is accompanied by warning signs before the migraine occurs, the warning signs include sensation feeling in arms and legs, experiencing flashes of light around the person.

Migraine without aura: Also known in certain quarters as common migraine, it is the type of migraine that occurs without giving warning signs.

Migraine can occur when a person is a child or at adult stage. For some people, migraines occur regularly up to several times a week.

Causes of Migraine

Although it is not certain what really causes migraines to occur, there are factors that can lead to migraines occurring. It is believed changes in the chemicals of the brain such as a reduction in the serotonin levels could cause migraine. Also genetics as well as environmental factors could be responsible for migraines.

There are still a lot of factors that can set off a migraine, they include the following: Physical factors: This includes tiredness, lack of sleep, lots of physical activity among others

Changes in hormones of women: Women who experience migraine complain about headaches before or during their periods which occurs when they have a drop in estrogen. There are also women who are prone to having migraine during menopause or pregnancy.

Food and diet: missing meals, dehydration, processed and salty foods, drinks like alcohol, wine, certain beverages, tea, coffee, cheese and chocolate.

Environmental factors: such as change in weather or climatic conditions, areas that are stuffy, smoking or areas where smoking occurs, loud noises, bright lights could trigger off migraine.

Emotional factors: such as depression, stress, being tensed and anxious

Medication: This includes some types of sleeping pills and contraceptive tablets

Symptoms of Migraine

A day or two before a migraine occurs, there are some signs you can watch out for. They include
  • Always wanting to eat as you will be craving for food
  • Feeling depressed
  • Feeling irritated
  • Getting tired easily
  • Getting constipated
  • Stiffness in the neck
There are also cases where people will experience what is known as the aura stage which are nervous system symptoms, they include
  • Being affected a lot by lights and sounds
  • You feel faint and dizzy
  • Tingling sensation in your arm or leg
  • You start to see flashes of light, bright lights or bright spots, seeing different shapes
  • Have problems speaking clearly
  • Could experience loss of vision
When left untreated a migraine can last as long as three days which is known as the attack stage. You will have problems like feeling pains on one side or both sides of your head, feel like vomiting, feeling faint and dizzy.

After experiencing an attack a person usually experiences frequent changes in mood and could feel exhausted. If you are having any of these symptoms, it very important to see a doctor as there are treatments available. Also identifying what triggers a migraine can help you reduce your risk of getting one.
